Fort worth filmmaker returns to roots on 25th anniversary of downtown tornado
Acclaimed filmmaker and Fort Worth native Rob Smat nears completion on an ambitious new project that combines his passion for severe weather and storytelling. Smat is developing a book titled “The Birdhouse” and a television show concept centered around the devastating tornado that struck downtown Fort Worth on March 28, 2000, some twenty-five years ago.
“The Birdhouse” will offer a comprehensive look at the F3 tornado that caused significant damage to Fort Worth’s downtown area. Smat has interviewed survivors, first responders, and business owners who were involved in the event, providing a multi-faceted perspective on the natural disaster.
In addition to the book, Smat is exploring the possibility of adapting the material into a television series. The show would delve deeper into the personal stories and long-term impacts of the tornado on the Fort Worth community, in the vein of AppleTV's Five Days at Memorial.
Rob Smat has built a career in filmmaking and storytelling. His work includes: Directing the feature film The Last Whistle. This project marks a significant second homecoming for Smat, who grew up in Fort Worth. His personal connection to the area makes him uniquely qualified to tell this important story.
“The Birdhouse” and the potential TV series aim to not only recount the events of that fateful day but also to explore the resilience of the Fort Worth community in the face of natural disasters.
